If you read up on our gift boxes, you know that we had a little special something tucked up our sleeves. You see, when we unloaded all those beautiful gift boxes after picking them up, we found a box buried at the bottom of the stack that was MUCH heavier than the rest. We opened the box to find… 25 sets of these gorgeous candles!
After some research, we found that the candles ended up in our load accidentally, originally intended for the alternative solid fuel program mentioned in our earlier post, as end stock. After a few email exchanges, we found ourselves officially in charge of what to do with these darlings! Each set has three unscented candles beautifully decorated with henna, boxed up for retail originally benefiting a charity. Since they have found a new home with us, we’ve decided that they still have life in them and can do some good in the world. The original retail boxes were beat up and quite sad-looking, so we’ve sent the boxes out with the rest of our usual recycling. I’ve painstakingly checked through the entire shipping box of candles to make sure everything we have meets our quality standards here at Amathia Soapworks, re-wrapping each candle in Kraft tissue paper.
We’ll be donating the proceeds of the sales of these candles through our website to a local charity through January and February of 2012 ($20 from each sale, to be exact!) After a lot of thought and consideration, we’ve chosen Operation Breakthrough to benefit from our fundraising efforts. Operation Breakthrough helps children affected by poverty by providing them necessities and opportunities that they would otherwise not have. Things like nutritious food and engaging books, dental and medical care as well as childcare, are all offered to the families who need it most in Kansas City. Operation Breakthrough has an amazing reach in our community, serving over 600 children from infants to teenagers, every day. The average income of families seen by Operation Breakthrough is a meager $9,400. About 25% of the children are homeless or near homeless and another 25% are in foster care or other placements due to abuse, neglect or other family crises. Fulfilling basic needs and providing a safe, caring, and enriching environment changes the lives of these children – giving them hope and reason to look forward to their bright futures.
Every single set of candles that go out during January and February will also receive a pamphlet from Operation Breakthrough detailing what exactly they do and how they do it, as well as a special thank you from us. Are you ready to help us help children in Kansas City? Then, go to take a peek at these beauties, eh?
